The '03 Springfield Rifles Era offers much to the Collector and student of the 1903 rifles, and is profusely illustrated with Campbell's technical drawings of the 1903, its parts and accessories. The illustrations are clear and concise and will aid in determining models and cutaway drawings will aid in understanding how parts such as the set triggers of the 1927 International Target rifle worked. Stock dimensions are given in great detail for many models as well. Four chapters are devoted to the development and variety of cartridges employed for the 1903 and variations-including the earliest prototypes, service, target and specialty ammunition including dimensions and compositions of the bullets used in tracer, armor piercing, incendiary and guard rounds. One chapter is dedicated to 22, rimfire ammo, too. Described are the processes used in manufacturing and what led to the WWI-era brittle receivers and the methods used to improve them. The arsenal formula for bluing is given, but since some of the materials are no longer available; it is for educational use only, More importantly, the author describes which parts were finished in what method, details sorely lacking in many collector books. Among the final chapters is one detailing how Springfield Armory learned to bed the National Match rifle, stock treatment, quality of barrels, mechanical considerations and sporterizing. All in all this book is a worthy addition to the collector of 1903 rifles as well as students of US military history. 368pp.
