From the author: "This is my third book about Sauer's guns made before 1946. The first two books are historical studies about the pistols Sauer made. After becoming a founding member of the German Gun Collectors' Association, I was asked if I would consider writing a new books about Sauer's 'long' guns made by the original company before the Communist takeover in 1945. Because of my interest in the old company, I decided to start from scratch, locate good photographs of different models and start corresponding with longtime collectors of Sauer long guns. All of that began nearly seven years ago. Studying and learning about these hunting and sporting guns became a very serious endeavor. In fact, it became a more serious endeavor than the writing or producing of the Sauer pistol books. The learning curve was slower because the field was much wider and much more involved for numerous reasons. It became more and more apparent the Sauer firm's most important product was long guns and not pistols! It also became more noticable Sauer's longevity and real interest was in the production of some of the finest hunting and sporting weapons the world has ever seen. These guns were the bread and butter of the firm. The quality of the workmanship, materials, engraving, engineering designs, durability and overall craftmanship is absolutely second to none! As I have told many of those men who have helped me, this is our book... not mine."
